Artificial turf infill options explained

Infill is material distributed between the fibres. It can provide ballast, support the pile, influence feel and maintenance, and become a pathway for migration or exposure. “Pet infill” or “cool infill” is not enough information.

What infill can do

  • Add mass so the carpet remains stable and works with its fastening and edge design.
  • Support fibres and influence how quickly they recover after traffic.
  • Change surface feel, traction, impact behaviour, heat, static, and ball response.
  • Occupy space in the pile and affect cleaning, drainage, grooming, and wear.
  • Move with feet, paws, tools, runoff, snow, and maintenance if containment is poor.

The required type, grading, depth, and mass depend on the exact turf and application. More is not always better; insufficient, excessive, contaminated, or uneven infill can all create problems.

Particle size and shape matter

A material name does not define a usable infill. Gradation influences how particles settle, compact, drain, migrate, and interact with fibres. Rounded and angular particles can behave differently. Dust or very fine fractions can affect handling and clog spaces. Require a current technical sheet with particle-size distribution, bulk density, recommended application rate, installation method, and tolerances.

Pet and hygiene claims

An infill cannot replace prompt waste removal, suitable drainage, rinsing, airflow, and an approved cleaning routine. “Antimicrobial” requires an identified active technology, target organisms, test method, duration, use conditions, safety documentation, and regulatory status. Odour-adsorption tests do not automatically prove sanitation or long-term odour control in an installed yard.

Heat claims

Colour, water retention, evaporation, solar exposure, wind, turf construction, and surrounding hardscape all affect temperature. A laboratory comparison may show a relative difference under one protocol; it does not guarantee a safe surface temperature. Ask for the exact system, initial and aged conditions, measurement locations, weather, baseline, duration, and whether cooling depends on repeated watering.

Chemical and environmental evidence

Most exposure research concerns sports fields with substantial quantities of crumb-rubber or alternative performance infill. That evidence should not be silently transferred to a residential sand-filled lawn. It does, however, demonstrate why sample identity, exposure pathway, constituent scope, and migration controls matter. The EU’s restriction for intentionally added microplastics includes a transition for granular infill on synthetic sports surfaces; it is a European regulatory action and not an Ontario residential rule.

What to request

  1. Product identity, manufacturer, lot or batch, composition, particle grading, and safety data sheet where applicable.
  2. Recommended mass/depth for the exact turf and use, plus installation and replenishment instructions.
  3. Independent reports for each chemical, heat, odour, dust, or performance claim.
  4. Containment details at doors, drains, beds, slopes, snow-storage areas, and property edges.
  5. Maintenance, spill, pet, winter, removal, and disposal instructions.
Best specification: name the turf and infill as one intended system, state the installed quantity and tolerance, and keep retained samples and batch documents.
