Artificial turf through a Mississauga winter
Snow, ice, salt, freeze-thaw cycles, and spring runoff are part of ownership in the GTA. Plan the winter routine before the first installation day.
What winter changes
Frozen ground, snow storage, ice, and repeated thawing can expose weak edges, poor drainage, low spots, and compacted infill. The surface may still look green under snow, but the system below it is dealing with water and movement. Keep access to drains and downspouts clear and do not use the turf as a place to store heavy snow indefinitely.
Snow removal
- Ask the exact manufacturer about shovels, blowers, ploughs, brushes, and metal edges.
- Use equipment that will not cut fibres, catch seams, pull edging, or move infill.
- Move snow to a planned location that does not block doors, drains, foundations, fences, or neighbours.
- Do not drag sharp tools across the surface or scrape aggressively after a freeze.
Ice and de-icers
Ice is still slippery on synthetic turf. Ask whether salt or a specific de-icer is compatible with the turf, infill, backing, nearby plants, pets, and drainage. Do not assume “pet safe” salt is safe for every plant or product. Remove standing water where it can safely be removed, but do not create a new flow toward a home or neighbour.
Spring inspection

| Surface | Compacted or displaced infill, stains, debris, and damage from equipment or furniture. |
Winter planning questions
- Where will snow be piled, and can that area carry the load and meltwater?
- Who clears the surface and who is responsible for damage?
- What happens if snowmelt exposes a drainage problem?
- Which care products and tools are allowed by the manufacturer?
- What is included in the warranty if freeze-thaw movement affects a seam or edge?
